The observation of a production system is a cornerstone to the proper establishment of an adequate System & Network Management policy.

Using Versant Vitness for the advanced monitoring of your entire Versant Object Database environment provides you with a fundamental tool for all database administration operations and decisions.

What's going on under the hood?

The Vitness add-on module delivers real-time views of performance data and analytical information about the Versant Object Database at the push of a button. Proactive database monitoring prevents potential faults that could be unexpectedly generated by an unobserved system – Versant Vitness alerts administrators before database availability is affected. Can life get any easier?

Experience the ease with which Vitness lets you individually monitor and remotely control your entire deployed Versant Object Database environment. And thanks to a finely adjustable alarm alert facility, you can proactively take action on potential problems before they become real ones.

In fact, the observation of a system is a cornerstone to the proper establishment of an adequate System & Network Management (S&NM) policy as it is intended and needed in large enterprises. In this context, Vitness provides remote management capabilities that make it a fundamental tool for all database administration operations and decisions.

Multiple Simultaneous Database Monitoring

Designed as an Eclipse-based RCP client, Vitness provides an extensive set of real-time displays of database activities and detailed performance metrics. Data from multiple Versant Object Database systems can be viewed simultaneously. And connecting to various systems is easy, because Vitness dynamically discovers agents and databases with no configuration on your part.

The Bigger Picture – In Detail

The Vitness client gives you everything you need to monitor your database right out of the box: Displaying the database structure and configuration information, dynamic sampling of physical and logical log volumes, dynamic sampling of volumes usage and volume fragmentation maps. With - quite literally - no effort at all, you can display dynamic statistics collection on multiple detachable graphs and information on sessions, transactions and locks. And when it comes to individual monitoring requirements you’ll feel right at home with Vitness, as you can customize statistics and logging.

Extensive Alarm Alert Facility

High availability requirements like 24/7 and 99.999% are becoming increasingly common, and the Versant Object Database typically serves as the backbone of such applications. The Vitness add-on module ensures you feel comfortable in these environments, providing a configurable threshold and event-triggered alarms with acknowledge, as well as configurable alarm logging and notification. Therefore Vitness gives you the ability to solve potential issues before they even arise.

Highly Evolved Management Console and Remote Agent

The Vitness add-on module for Versant Object Databases is designed following the standard client / agent paradigm. Based upon the OSGi technology standard, the console is an Eclipse-based (RCP) graphical interface that will run any platform independent of a Versant Object Database installation and display the ongoing activity of the monitored database environment. The standalone multithreaded remote agent resides on the Versant server system. The SNMP v2 compliant agent allows multiple protocol adapters, and integration as a subagent with standard master agents, as well as SOA-based application design.

As its core, Vitness is a tool for the monitoring of Versant Object Database installations. But Vitness is also an expandable framework for additional administrative and management components such as license management, database compaction with Versant Vorkout and more – in the near future.

Furthermore, Vitness can keep itself up-to-date. The built-in update mechanism will download and install any improvements or new components as they are introduced.

The Vitness add-on module is available as of now. Please contact sales@versant.com to get more information.
